Patrick Rochon Light Drawings- Analysis
Photographer: Patrick Rochon
Model: Carolanne
video: http://vimeo.com/26643189
CONTEXT: The photo was taken by Patrick Rochon, The idea of this photo was to show fashion throughout light drawing. It started as a fashion shoot between make up artist Nathalie Dodon and Patrick Rochon alone.
The idea was to do a commercial version of light painting for a fashion client. After some time the team started to build up Christian Pomerleau (VJ Gridspace) joined to do projection while Patrick was doing light painting.
He started doing Light Painting photography in Montreal, Canada in 1992. he also used to do “traditional” photography but in 1997, while he was flying to Tokyo he realised that he will dedicate all his time to the light painting photography. Now everything he does, involves the movement of light. Because of this Patrick also started to collaborate with dancers and performers, shooting portraits, fashion, cars, high-end products and nudes.
AESTHETICS: This image uses very hot colours like red, purple and some shades of orange and yellow making the photo look more energetic, wild and passionate which I think links very well with the fashion as it catches your attention and gives you the right amount of emotions while looking at this photo. Another thing that really catches my attention is different shapes of the light paints making the photo look busy and more interesting because everywhere you look there is a different aspect of this photo.
MEANING: The meaning of this photo is to show fashion throughout light paintings. It was also to mix colours and emotions that link with the mood of the model. For me the meaning of this photo was to show how emotions can be described throughout light painting, for example the colour red represents passion which links with the way the model is presenting herself. The light paints could represent the flashlights on a catwalk and the way the model is presenting herself shows that she is trying to show off the clothes she is wearing. For me the best part of this photo is the way it confuses you in some ways because of all the different shades of colours and also the varieties of shapes.
PERSONAL RESPONSE: Overall I really like this picture because it creates a sense of movement and confusion, also I really like the colours that have been used in this photo as I think it really suits the model and the overall mood of this picture. Another thing I like about this photo is the way the model is posing because it makes her look more wild which suits the shades of red and purple.
