Pablo Picasso Analysis
Title: PABLO PICASSO CENTAUR
Photographer: Gjon Mili
Date: 1949
Location: France
Description: This photograph shows this modern master painting with light on a photographic canvas in a way that delivers his vision to today’s technological grade. At Vallauris in 1949, is the photograph of Picasso drawing the Centaur with a “light pencil.” This spectacular “space drawing” is a momentary happening inscribed in thin air with a flashlight in the dark – an illumination of Picasso’s brilliance set off by the spur of the moment.
AESTHETICS: the colour of the photo is black and white which I really like because it shows more contrast and it also suits the mood of the photo. You can also see a lot of shadows that highlight the whole photo. I think this was done on purpose because it made the photo more descriptive and emotional. It was made by using a light pencil and creating light lines by moving the light pencil in the air. The shutter speed was set up to very slow so that there was time to move the pencil around and to take the picture at the same time.
MEANING: The meaning of this photo is to show the history of the Centaur however it also creates a sense of rhythm and dance, the way he is moving the light pencil creates interesting movement which could link to music. Another meaning of this photos was to show the confusion of Centaur . Centaur is a very mythical creature that is very confusing and messed up for some people that's why I think this photo was created by showing confusing, messy and difficult lines to explain the creature. I think the photo was taken in this background because the background shows some historical and old objects and this links to the light drawing Picasso is creating. The mood of the photo is dark and emotional because of the black and white effect.
PERSONAL RESPONSE: Overall, I like this photo because i find it very interesting because of the confusing messy lines. I think the lines are messy and confusing but at the same time very neat because they create a drawing of a creature. I also like that it creates kind of messy and dark emotions because it makes the photo more historical and fascinating. I also like that the photo is in black and white because i find these photos more interesting and meaningful.
This is one of the best light painting out of all of his work because it has a better meaning and you can see the creature very clearly on this photo.
